Defending Champions Susannah Scaroni and Marcel Hug to Race 2023 TCS New York City Marathon on November 5

Professional wheelchair division races to serve as U.S. Paralympics Track & Field Marathon Selection Event for Paris 2024 Games

New York, August 28, 2023 – Defending champions Susannah Scaroni of the United States and Marcel Hug of Switzerland will headline a professional wheelchair field at the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 5 that includes eight event champions and 26 Paralympians.

This year’s race will also serve as the U.S. Paralympics Track & Field Marathon Selection Event for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, which begin exactly one year from today. The top two American finishers in both the men’s and women’s wheelchair races will automatically qualify for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Marathon.

Two-time Paralympic medalist Scaroni won her first TCS New York City Marathon title last year, breaking the tape in 1:42:43 to beat the previous course record of 1:43:04 set by Tatyana McFadden in 2015. Since then, she has been on a tear in 2023, winning the Boston Marathon, United Airlines NYC Half, her fifth consecutive Mastercard New York Mini 10K, and a bronze medal at the World Para Athletics Championships. She has been on the podium 18 times at Abbott World Marathon Majors races and won gold in the 5,000 and bronze in the 800 meters at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Her personal-best time of 1:27:31 at the 2021 Grandma’s Marathon remains a world best in the marathon.

“I am thrilled to come back to New York this year,” Scaroni said. “As always, the challenge of the course makes it a favorite of mine. This year is even more special, though, as it will serve as our first opportunity to secure a spot on the Paris 2024 team. I will be giving everything I have to hopefully go home with a smile and Paralympic team slot.”

Scaroni will be challenged in New York by three other former event champions, including five-time TCS New York City Marathon champion and 20-time Paralympic medalist Tatyana McFadden. American McFadden, who has won 24 Abbott World Marathon Majors races, will be competing for what would be a record sixth career title in the wheelchair division. Switzerland’s Manuela Schär, an eight-time Paralympic medalist, will be racing for her fourth TCS New York City Marathon title. Australia’s Madison de Rozario, the defending Paralympic Marathon and London Marathon champion, will race for her second TCS New York City Marathon title after winning in 2021.

Hug, a 12-time Paralympic medalist, will race for a record-extending sixth TCS New York City Marathon title after winning his fifth and breaking the course record last year. In 2022, he took the tape in 1:25:26, smashing the previous course record of 1:29:22 set by Kurt Fearnley in 2006. He also won the event in 2021, 2017, 2016, and 2013. Already this year, he has won the Tokyo, Boston, and London Marathons, breaking the course records in both Tokyo and Boston. He also picked up three gold medals at the World Para Athletics Championships in July in Paris.

“The TCS New York City Marathon has one of the most challenging, but at the same time, unique courses, passing through all five boroughs of New York and its great vibes,” Hug said. “I can’t wait to get to the start line and to show my best performance. It would mean a lot to me if I could win this iconic and prestigious marathon for the sixth time.”

American Daniel Romanchuk will race for his third TCS New York City Marathon title, after becoming the first American and youngest athlete ever to win the men’s wheelchair division in 2018 and following that up with another victory in 2019. He was the runner-up last year and also owns a gold and bronze medal from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. The Netherlands’ five-time Paralympic medalist Jetze Plat, who won this year’s United Airlines NYC Half, along with Great Britain’s 10-time Paralympic medalist and the 2010 TCS New York City Marathon champion David Weir will return as well. South Africa’s Ernst van Dyk, the TCS New York City Marathon winner in both 2015 and 2005, has represented his country at every Paralympics since 1992 and will retire from competitive racing after crossing the finish line in New York in November.

The 2023 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 5 will have 50,000 runners and be televised live on WABC-TV Channel 7 in the New York tristate area, throughout the rest of the nation on ESPN2, and around the world by various international broadcasters.
