Shalane Flanagan, the 2008 Olympic 10,000-meter bronze medalist and 10,000-meter (30:22.22) recordholder, will make her much-anticipated 26.2-mile debut at the ING New York City Marathon on November 7. 2010 World Indoor ChampionshipsFlanagan also holds U.S. indoor records of 8:33.25 in the 3000 and 14:47.62 in the 5000. Flanagan won the 2010 USA Half-Marathon in Houston in 1:09:41 and is also the 2010 USA Cross Country champion. She was 12th in World Cross Country and led the U.S. women in a team bronze-medal effort. Her abbreviated 2010 track season included a third place 14:49.08 for third place in the 5000 at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene. Her U.S. 5000 record of 14:44.80 was broken this summer by Molly Huddle, who ran 14:44.76. Originally from Massachusetts, she was a two-time NCAA Cross Country champion for the University of North Carolina. Flanagan now resides in Oregon and is coached by Jerry Schumacher. Along with reporters from Universal Sports and "The Wall Street Journal," we spoke to Flanagan (and Schumacher) in New York a few days after her performance in the ING Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon, where she was fourth in 1:08:36, and after she had run portions of the ING New York City Marathon course with teammates Simon Bairu and Tim Nelson, who will also be racing on November 7. Yeah, it took us awhile to post this, but…things happen.

What was it like, running parts of the New York City Marathon course, as opposed to looking at it from a truck last year?
Shalane Flanagan: It's a very different feel. I hadn't realized how hilly particularly something like the last four miles was. Riding in the truck, I remember thinking "oh, this is a significant hill, right on Fifth Ave," before going into the park, but didn't really realize until running yesterday how hard it's going to be. Everybody (she and Bairu and Nelson) was saying our legs were pretty torn up from running the half marathon, so we felt like it was great simulation. We were just trying to absorb it.
