Happy 40th birthday New York City Marathon!

The New York City marathon turns 40 today!

I knew this was the year, but was alerted that today is the exact day when 40 years ago 127 people ran loops around Central Park until they hit 26.2 miles by the blog Inside the Apple - and confirmed the bit of city trivia with the New York Road Runners.

It's amazing to think how different the event was in 1970. Today, well over 40,000 runners participate in the race. Back then, 127 signed up for $1 and 55 crossed the finish line.
